Zimbabwe Russia Friendship Association Marks 45th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic engagement between Zimbabwe and Russia intensified in 2025, marked by a high-level meeting in Moscow during the 80th anniversary commemoration of World War II victory. Both sides confirmed their commitment to expanding partnership across multiple sectors. Foreign ministers also held talks in March and December 2025, signing a declaration on countering unilateral coercive measures.

Key areas of cooperation showing strong growth include diamond and gold exploration (with investment doubling to US$30 million), healthcare (including an agreement on medical education and science), and the establishment of Zimbabwe's first national air ambulance service, which has transported approximately 1,200 patients. A cybersecurity training programme was also launched in Harare.

Looking ahead to 2026, the 45th anniversary of diplomatic ties presents an opportunity to reinforce bilateral cooperation. Priority issues include increasing trade turnover, applying space technologies for agriculture and natural resource exploration, developing nuclear energy applications for medicine and agriculture, and the Third Russia-Africa Summit expected to be held in Africa for the first time. Russia continues to offer over 150 annual scholarships for Zimbabwean students, with 171 allocated for the 2025/2026 academic year.

Zimbabwe's bid for a non-permanent UN Security Council seat (2027–2028) enjoys Russia's support. Regarding travel, Zimbabwean ordinary passport holders still require a visa to enter Russia, though an electronic visa option has been available since December 2024. Discussions on a potential mutual visa-free regime remain ongoing. The 6th session of the Bilateral Intergovernmental Commission will be hosted by Zimbabwe in 2026.
